Zapatista: SEEDS OF RESISTANCE

Photographed in Chiapas, Mexico and published in Esquire Ukraine, September 2014

Pictured in this series: Zapatista youth living cooperatively on reclaimed land in Chiapas, Mexico. They've inherited their parents revolution and a battle against perhaps the greatest threat to their movement to date. With the start of commercial planting of transgenic corn seeds in Mexico in 2012, their indigenous communities will be forced to reckon with the intellectual property rights exercised by Monsanto. In the case of India, where this process is well under way, 850,000 rice farmers have committed suicide in response to conditions created by a GMO economy.

"We have started a global citizen’s movement for seed freedom, to say no to transgenics, no to patents, no to Monsanto’s empire to destroy the planet, and our lives and our food systems."
-Vandana Shiva, Indian 'seed activist'
